Young people today have to navigate a true obstacle course when it comes to choosing the right training for our career goals. There are so many options. And, in a job market that is increasingly qualified and competitive, we go through a lot of doubt and hesitation to make a choice.
I feel like the hospitality sector is particularly stressful, as hotels expect nothing less than excellence from their staff. Excellence is what Institut de tourisme et d’hôtellerie du Québec (ITHQ) and Hotel Schools of Distinction (HSD) have given me. Of course, many schools and programs around the world teach similar kinds of knowledge. The fact that they don’t just transfer knowledge is what makes the ITHQ and HSD training exceptional.
They put in that extra effort to teach soft skills and help students develop their networks, which I think is the key to their success. When I came to Montreal in 2014, I didn’t know anyone in the hotel industry. Today, thanks to the ITHQ, I’ve visited all of Montreal’s major hotels and met and connected with dozens of managers. In just two years at the ITHQ, I met many other students in hotel management, particularly at two extraordinary international events: the Young Hoteliers Summit in Lausanne and the International Student Challenge at Hotelschool The Hague in Amsterdam. These two events let me considerably grow my network, talk with other passionate people in our industry, and access incredible career opportunities.
The ITHQ and HSD choose students who have the desire and potential to go on to great careers. They give us tools and opportunities to network with our peers as well as key influencers in our industry. This is an amazing gift and a significant launchpad to a rewarding career.
I received my diploma in Hautes Études en gestion hôtelière internationale/Advanced Studies in International Hotel Management in October. Less than two weeks later, I was contacted by the human resources manager at a Fairmont hotel whom I had met at the ITHQ several months earlier. The manager invited me to apply for a management position, and I got the job. This would never have happened for me without the ITHQ’s solid support and excellent reputation.
