For many people the start of the new year is January 1st. For me that time is Autumn. That’s because it’s the start of the academic year and this marks an opportunity for a fresh start. Autumn is also one the most beautiful time of the year, especially in Finland. Fall is especially amazing in the north where it seems like nature is preparing itself for something new. But that is not the only reason I feel this way. This is also the time of the year when people are starting a whole new chapter, whether it’s first year of school, going on exchange or finishing up final courses before graduation.

In Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences we have the privilege of welcoming many new students this year. All of them are excited and ready to learn in one of the best hospitality schools in Finland. They are now all part of the HSD family. So congratulations on joining an HSD university. which means getting an education shaped by employers in your field of choice.

Here are few of the student’s thoughts about starting studies at Haaga-Helia:

“I expect to learn a lot about different streams and careers and get a clue of my dream job. I expect to graduate feeling as some sort of a professional in tourism with all the possibilities to work in Hospitality”.

I expect to learn about all sorts of things related to tourism and hospitality, but also things like public speaking and how to present myself in a professional manner. I also expect a lot of group work and practical learning, more so than just the academic part”.

I have met many sorts of people and what I think is great is that the school is very international so you get to create contacts abroad as well as in Finland”.

“Of course the lecturers expect a lot of us which I find is just another source for motivation but on the other hand I also expect a lot from them”.

I wish each and every one of you success. Regardless of whether you are finishing your studies or have just started them. Remember you are part of HSD and that mean your future lies in the Hospitality industry.
